A person who is not dependable does not keep his word, cannot be trusted to fully complete his work, and is not consistently obedient to authority.

He is dishonest with his words; saying one thing, and doing something else. An undependable person is selfish – he is more concerned about himself and about satisfying his own fleshly desires.

Dependability is a character trait that is shown by a person who has a habit of being trustworthy and reliable in word and behavior.

A dependable person can be trusted to do what he says he will do, and to do what he has been told to do by those in authority over him. His “sound speech” (Titus 2:8) will be followed by matching actions in his life.

Deu 23:23

That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.

Tit 2:7

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

A dependable person shows in his life a “pattern of good works.” A pattern repeats itself over and over again. A dependable person is consistent in saying and doing what is right, so that others can see a pattern in his life that he will likely keep repeating.

PERSONAL EVALUATION

Do you show the character trait of dependability? Say Yes to only those things that you do consistently in your life.

  1. __I promptly pay back money that I have borrowed – without having to be reminded.
  2. __I am dependable in getting work done on time.
  3. __I remember to keep my word when I have told someone that I will do something.
  4. __I can be depended upon to properly secure and lock the house.
  5. __My behavior is dependable; I consistently do that which is right to do.
  6. __I am dependable in getting to places at the scheduled time.
  7. __I am dependable in getting to places before or at the time that I have said that I would be there.
  8. __If I borrow something (paper, pen, tools, etc.) I always pay it back or return it in the same or better condition.
  9. __I can be depended upon by adults to do important jobs.
  10. __I can be depended upon to keep private information private (unless telling another person would help somebody).
  11. __I am dependable in getting information home to my parents on time and in the right way.
  12. __I am dependable in getting information from my parents to my teachers on time and in the right way.
  13. __My parents can depend upon me to be home on time.

Are you a dependable person?

Can others depend upon you to do what you say you will do or to do what you have been asked to do?

Set a specific goal for yourself so that you will have “sound speech” and a “pattern of good works.”

“Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.”

Jeremiah 8:7
